Peter Butter??
- January 13th, 2009 11:02 pm
As a resident of the South and an area layered with southern drawl, hearing the drawl used on the radio is never surprising. However, young children seem to have an extra drawl. They drag the words out longer than adults, and it is always funny to hear.
It seems to be a regular thing to use the voices of children on the radio when discussing a charitable event or an organization trying to help people out down here. I’m not sure where they round up the kids to do it. But it is always amusing.
For instance, this morning while driving, I heard a little girl on the radio advertising for help for families with children under the age of five. It was offering vouchers for milk, cheese, eggs and peanut butter..
However, her voice made it sound like this:
‘Eef you’uv got a chald under the age of fav, come to the health department to see eef you qualify for meeyulk (milk), chaaayse (cheese), aygs (eggs) and Peter Butter.’
PETER BUTTER?? PETER BUTTER?? I thought to myself. Were they really offering Peter Butter? Because that sounds way more like an ad for male lube than for helpful program.
Woot! Free Peter Butter for the masses. Get your PETER BUTTER! GET IT TODAY! Butter it up for free!
Foolishness aside, I can only imagine what would’ve happened if people had heard those ads when I was in high school. I had enough friends that regularly raided the Health Department’s free condoms, and I’m sure they would have been pumped as hell to find out that the Health Department was down there giving away free Peter Butter.
I hope the doors of the local health department aren’t being stormed by those in search of free Peter Butter. After all, it is usually already full of young teens trying to sneak birth control without their parents knowing. The free Peter Butter would really bring in the masses.

LOL I know this post is about the Peter Butter but I have to say my favorite part is the phonetic spelling of: meeyulk (milk), chaaayse (cheese), aygs (eggs)
But who knows? There’s probably someone out there rushing to buy the url to PeterButter.com after reading this post so they can start a whole new butter business

I’m British and my husband is more Seattle. However, our two-year-olds are Texan-born. They say “meeyulk” and “aygs”. Jessica’s interpretation of peanut butter isn’t nearly as colourful: “Peena baya.”

I know that I have an accent and I don’t like to hear my recorded voice but some of the television and radio ads with that drawl really get on my nerves. But, Peter Butter? That’s funny!

The funny thing is, when I saw the name of this post in the feed, that’s exactly where my mind went. For once, the name of the post and the ‘real’ subject matter of the post were the same. So many people use the post name as a draw – a play on words – and the post isn’t as playful as the title suggests. Thank you, Amanda, for restoring my faith.

Ha! Being from the South (Georgia) I, too, can attest to the problems that the southern drawl brings. Definitely don’t want a raid on the Health Department!

I find the southern drawl just enchanting. I love listening to it. I have a friend who was from North Carolina and it was fun to try and get him to say sentences without the drawl. The rule was if he talked without it I had to talk with it. Loads of laughs.
