Nicknames:Amanda sometimes Mandy, NEVER EVER Mander

  • December 9th, 2008 5:04 pm

I was named after the Barry Manilow song, ‘Mandy’.  My parents officially named me Amanda as a formality, I suppose.  So until I went to preschool, I was always known as Mandy. I am still known as Mandy to my family.

When I started preschool, my teachers called me Amanda, because that was what it said on the forms.  Looking back, I was probably too shy to correct them. So I went by the name Amanda even though I wasn’t quite sure who this Amanda character was, because I had always been called Mandy.  Who was Amanda?

For the remainder of school and when I met people, I told them my name was Amanda.  Yet all of my family still calls me Mandy.

Truthfully, it wasn’t all that confusing until my mother decided that my first car needed a personalized license plate.  So she purchased one that said MANDI in huge letters.  That would of been fine, except no one knew who MANDI was.  At least once a day, I had to explain to someone why I had a license plate on my car that said Mandi when I was called Amanda.

To make matters even more complicated, I live in the South. Some of us have a situationally adorable tendency to leave the first letter off of a word, particularly if it happens to be a vowel that is easily dismissed.  So to my friends I wasn’t Amanda, I was ‘Manda.   If your name is Olivia, you would probably be called ‘Livia.

I can deal with Amanda, Manda, and even Mandy.  However, one of my husband’s friends thinks it is amusing to call me Mander.  And well, it’s not.  It absolutely IS NOT okay to call me Mander. DO NOT GO THERE.  I put up with it from him, because he is hilarious and otherwise okay.  But I hate when people I first meet think that for some god foresaken reason calling me Mander makes us tight.  It doesn’t.  Calling me Mander makes me quasi hateful and damn near violent.

Mander? SERIOUSLY?  It sounds like a brand of coochie cream or a type of really cheap foundation like my grandma used to wear.  The sort that looks particularly dark in certain spots, but nonexistant in others.  You know the kind I’m talking about, don’t act like you don’t.

So, I am Amanda, sometimes Mandy, but NEVER, NEVER EVER Mander.  Just don’t go there. If this was the 90’s, I would most definitely tell you to talk to the hand.

Do you have any nicknames? Do you have one you HATE to be called?

This post was inspired by Jennifer’s post about sometimes being Jenny but preferring to be Jennifer.

My name is short, Nora, so nicknames aren’t really a problem. Best one was being called Yorya by friends adorable toddler. Worst is Norma, which makes me quasi hateful, but only if you should know that isn’t my name..

I went by Jackie in elementary and middle school, then started going by AyJae (pronounced AJ) in high school. I have since gone back to Jacklyn or Jackie. My grandpa has always called me Jake, my mom has always called me Sissy, or DoodleBug.

My husband, his family, and sometimes his friends call me J, or just type J when referencing me in a chat or email converstaion and I hate it. I feel that I have a name, or a nick name that is shorter than Jacklyn or Jackie, so use that… Don’t just call me by my first initial. I cannot stand it.

Also, randomly, even friends I’ve had for years will look at me and call me Jennifer, or Jessica. I don’t know why they’ll just blurt it out and then shake their heads, like “Why did I call you that? I know you’re not Jessica/Jennifer…” Also, even more randomly, probably because my name ends with ‘YN’ I get called Kathryn quite freeqently.

Mander? What is wrong with him? That’s unacceptable, and most definitely not amusing. In fact, I am outraged for you. Please give him this message for me:
“Dude, she is NOT a trucker. She is not a biker from Hell’s Angels, either. And she is most definitely not a big fat prize-winning hog. So please stop. It’s Mandy or Amanda, take your pick – between those two ONLY.”

I have never heard anyone called an Amanada “Mander”. Is this a common nickname in the south? I’ve only had a couple of good nicknames and both were based around my maiden-name which means that people don’t get them now that my last name is different.

My name is also Amanda and I also live in Kentucky (Northern Kentucky). I’ve ALWAYS been Amanda and it drives me out of my mind when people who don’t know me call me Mandy. I only let people with whom I’m close to call me Mandy – my husband, best friends, etc. I think it is rude that someone would want to be all friendly and give me a nick name when they don’t know anything else about me!

I was Maggie from birth until kindergarten — Maggie being the closest name to the combination of Mei and Gil, my parents’ names, and deemed more appropriate for a baby than Kristan. Then I decided a big girl needed a big girl name, so I politely requested (read: brattily insisted) that everyone use my real name. In high school I became Hoffy. Finally in college, I was dubbed Stan, and I hated it. Why couldn’t I be Kris? I love the nickname Kris!

Well, I resisted Stan for a long long time (like, at least a month) until finally a friend was talking to someone else and asked him to STAND up, and I turned and said, “Huh? Me?”

    -_-

Now I love it, and actually it’s what my boyfriend (who I met in college) calls me as if it’s my real name.

I also love when friends tell me they meet guys named Stan (usually 40 year old car salesmen or such) and think for a minute, Man, that poor guy has a girl’s name!

Oh, I commented on Jennifer’s post, too. The nickname thing – IT KILLS ME. It’s so upsetting to me that I resorted to all caps to discuss it.

I’m a Dominique. My parents called me Nicky when I was little until I decided in second grade to be Dominique. So folks who have known me forever call me Nicky, but that’s it. If I met you when I was older than seven, you don’t get to have a nickname.

But my best friend decided to call me Dom. I hate it, but I love her, so I let her get away with it. But if anyone else calls me that, I get fired up. When I first started dating my now-husband, his family wanted to shorten my name to Dom. Poor guy had to spend a long time explaining that I didn’t like my name shortened.

So imagine the explaining we had to do when my best friend called me Dom in her speech at our wedding. Argh.

When I was younger, I couldn’t stand being called Jenn. My brothers would call me that just to irritate me. I had a friend in jr high who started calling me Jenn and I would always answer “Niffer”, hoping to encourage him to call me Jennifer. Well, the Niffer stuck, and all thru high school, I was called Niffer. Kinda funny now. I have embrased Jenn now though. :)

Great post! I grew up as Missy, but when I went off to college I started going by Melissa because it sounded more grown up. I still have that name split between work and home life.

The name I can’t stand? MEL. Yuk. Hate it. Mel is a man’s name. Like Mel’s diner. I definitely correct people who call me that. ugh.

Without giving away my real name (although you probably know it), I have a name that is usually a nickname. So people always assume (like the ass that they are) that my name couldn’t be JUST my name, it of course has to be attached to a longer name.

So if you were just Mandy and people started calling you Amanda… but that’s not your name.

So if you call me [Amanda], it really pisses me off. Especially when I was growing up and I had to fight adults about my own damn name. I think I know what it is more than you F-tard.

how interesting! I am also amanda, but since highschool everyone calls me Mander. I don’t mind it. I have always been an anti- Mandy. I feel about Mandy the way you do about Mander. :)

I can’t figure out why a lot of people can’t discern the difference between “Jan” and “Jane”. I get called Jan about 80% of the time, even after I tell them my name is “Jane”. I do not like Jan. But I could be called worse, I guess :)

I’m sorry – I can’t actually focus on your question because I’m now stuck on the earworm you dumped on me…

UGH! I know what you’re sayin: Smashly! Yes, I HATE IT WITH A PASSION. A cousin coined it and I hated him for years…until the dreaded ugly step-child of a nickname came: TRASHLY! Yes, I do want to kill him! And yes, it is quite unbelievable!

My name is Amandah my mom wanted to make my name different so she added a `H` which was cool until classmates saw it and had some jokes. They would say “Its A-man-Duh! Haha get it” That would ANNOY me but i would try to ignore it. Anyway, my grandma would always call me manderz, or panda i didnt mind panda but manderz? Ugh. The rest of my family calls me Mandah, Mandi, i like spelling it as Mandee =), and Mandah Pandah. But my teachers often misspell my name as Amandha =(
