Guest Post: Anglophile Football Fanatic

  • October 8th, 2008 12:00 am

(Today’s guest post is from Holly at Anglophile Football Fanatic.  Aside from being a self-proclaimed loud-mouthed native Texan, she is really hilarious and one of my twitter and plurk pals.)

The lovely and talented Amanda asked me to guest post for her and I am duly honored. At first, I was mighty intimidated. Then, I was worried about having anything constructive to say. Finally, as I was sitting on my porcelain throne (where I come up with my best blogging fodder), I remembered something I’d just read and thought it might make a good Shamelessly Sassy – type post, one requiring a little Q&A.
Like the post above mentions, in Texas we are very big into homecoming mums. Almost everywhere I go right now will have school colors on display to create the biggest, gaudiest, most ostentatious creation to pin to some lucky girl’s shirt during the big football game.Apparently, this is only something we Texans do, and I only discovered it when my best friend in high school was crowned Homecoming Queen.New York relatives gave her hell for her mum.
When I moved to Philadelphia in 1993, I dreamed about eating my first ever authentic cheese steak. It was so worth the wait.Even now, 15 years later, my taste buds start to water in remembrance of such an incredible taste confection.Obviously, since that point, restaurant chains have added cheese steaks to their menus, but I must say I’ve never had one that tasted quite that amazing outside of Philly.
I’ve lived in several places around the country, and despite all of us being Americans, there are certainly regional differences, including the two I mentioned. This makes me wonder if I were a visitor, what is something about where you live I might be ignorant of?Whether you say pop, soda, or use the name of the drink, whether you say yous, yous guys, or like me, y’all – tell me one.I know there must be plenty.

(If you haven’t had enough of Holly, this is one of my favorite posts from her site.  The last paragraph is my favorite part. Also, she will totally kill me for linking this.)

Hahahaha!! I just had to explain Homecoming to a French friend of mine who now lives in Phoenix. I don’t think I ever was able to get the point across. But I absolutely LOVED Homecoming!! I was on the Court one year … until I got In School Suspension (ISS) for having blue streaks in my hair. They kicked me off the Court after that. Something about not setting a good example for the underclasses. The MUMS! The GARTERS! The literal BELLS and WHISTLES!!! The FORMAL DRESSES and HIGH HEELS and the DANCE and then SKIPPING the DANCE right after we all got our PICTURES taken!! Eating at BENNIHANA!!

Aww, look, now I actually miss part of high school. What have you done to me??

And for the record, we say coke. “I want a coke.” “What kind?” “A Sprite, please.”

Thanks for the flashback. I have to call my brother now and see what kind of mum he ordered for his girlfriend. I think my most expensive one topped out at $110. :)

Wow, I’m famous!! Well, since I’m from Texas, too - There’s probably not much I can tell you about it!

The Homecoming thing still kills me - Hubs thinks we’re all nuts! Who knew?

    Thanks for linking me!

Being a native Texan, I spent many a homecoming conjuring up the BIGGEST MUM I could … even now the mere mention of homecoming brings to mind these memorys. Anyone who is not from Texas thinks I’ve completely lost my mind, but I think its just great!

I’ve lived alot of places since that time and yes, I think each place has it’s own unique addition, but I must admit…Texas has some of my favorites.

Well, I actually live near Philly, so telling you about the cheesesteaks is obviously pointless. LOL!

HOWEVER, I live in a small town near the Poconos and there are A LOT of Pennsylvania Dutch people here. To say PA Dutch people like pickled food would be an understatement. But there is one I actually can’t get enough of. It’s called hot bologna, and is essentially, picked bologna. I realize how positively vile it sounds, but I can assure you, it really is quite a delectable treat. LOL!

this isn’t like, earth-shatteringly exciting, but I’m in CT and we call sub sandwiches ‘grinders.’ I lived in Boston for awhile, used to ask for them and got blank stares in return. I think it’s a CT thing–we’re so wild like that!

I’m a native Texan, born and bred here. I definitely say “y’all.” I love a good rodeo, and I know which side to mount a horse.

Well, we’re a Pop area here - but here’s the thing. In Michigan, there is NO other ginger ale but Vernors. And Faygo red pop is the only Faygo worth drinking.

NO mass transit. It’s a car culture - even though none of us can afford cars or gas any longer since manufacturing died.

I may have to write a whole blog post on this. I live in Chicago now and it’s all about food: Chicago pizza and Chicago hot dogs.

In Minneapolis, where I grew up, we had hot dish (casserole) and duck, duck, grey duck (goose) and bars (like brownies but different kinds, like lemons bars, peanut butter bars, etc). I never knew this was weird until I moved away.

Pipe Stem. there are no “pipe stems” where I’m from and it took me asking “What the heck is that?” to find out.

I love me some AFF! And out here in sunny california, I’d have to say that we say “dude” A LOT. Ok ok, I say dude a lot. We also regulate our distance in time frames rather than the actual miles we will be driving. Because it could be 10 miles, but it will take you a half an hour to get there.

Amanda, I now love you for linking up that post of Holly’s.

Let’s see…if you came to Milwaukee I’d take you for beer & a pulled pork sandwich at Saz’s - its down in the valley smack dab between the headquarters of Miller & Harley. VERY Milwaukee!

In cental California there are two things that I said growing up that no one says in SoCal. Oakies for one (in reference to those brought here from Oaklahoma during the dust bowl) and it was not a compliment. It usually refers to white trash (that’s me!). Second, eveyone in central California says hella. That’s hella cool, it’s hella hot….I don’t know any where else that they say that.

I live in KY and the whole “mullet” stereotype isn’t just the stuff of legends… it’s totally true. One of these days I’m taking a pair of scissors with me to Walmart and I’m going to randomly sneak up on people and cut their hair. I like to think they’ll thank me later.
