Phone Giveaway!

  • October 3rd, 2008 3:10 pm

The Contest is now over. We have a winner, commenter #13 Siobhan.  Thanks so much for all of the entries!

I was recently given the opportunity to check out the new Vtech DS6121.  It’s a very sleek cordless phone with many desirable features.   The phone is equipped with DECT 6.0 Technology.  It has a digital answering system. Caller ID function.  And the design is just so handy.

The phone even has special digital technology that will protect you from identity theft during phone conversations where you might have to give personal information, which I thought was particularly handy and interesting.  Another favorite feature of mine is the selectable ringtone option. Additionally, the sound quality was awesome.

To be honest, my favorite feature by far, aside from the slim design, is the ability to locate a lost handset.  On the base of the phone, there’s a button you can push to help locate the handset if you lose it. I am so guilty of this.  It was the neatest feature, by far. It is the best cordless phone that I have ever used.  In the past, I’ve had many vTech products, including the cordless phones, and as always, they deliver in design, usability, and overall function.

You also have a chance to win one of these spectacular telephones. You don’t have a landline, you say? Well, try to win the phone to give as a gift for an upcoming bridal shower, birthday, or Christmas gift.  It is absolutely fabulous.   All you have to do is leave a comment telling me if you have ever prank called anyone.  When I was in middle school, this was the thing to do. We would just leaf through the phone book dialing people up and asking them bizarre things. Until one day, when we got in loads of trouble, which is a whole other post.

Anyway, enter to win the phone! Come on, you know you want to!

Only one entry per person. This contest will be over at 7 PM on October 11, 2008. A winner will be selected using a random generator.

I did prank call once (or a few times).

The one I remember was a girl that was in my sisters class. Her dad was the principal of the school, and she was kinda skeezy.

So, we called him and said “It’s 11:00, do you know where your daughter is?”

    And he said “Which one?”

At that point, I ran out of clever things to say (Not that I had actually SAID anything clever) and hung up.

Everytime I think of it, I’m all - that wasn’t even funny!!

My sister and I used to call random numbers and she would yell “Help! I’m getting murdered!”

Until one woman yelled me “Oh No! I’m getting murdered too!”

It took us years to figure out that she probably wasn’t.

When I was very young, before caller ID of course, I called a random number and asked the following lame question:

    Me: Is your refrigerator running?

    Prankee: Yes

Me: Well, you’d better catch it, it’s running down the street!

    Is that lame-o or what?

I used to prank call my mother all the time (when I was in Scotland). I’d call her from a friend’s house and pretend I was from a home order catalogue that she’d order from and I’d put on my best annoying English accent.

There used to be a feature on the phones in Britain where you could dial 1-7-4 and it would call you back a minute later and eventually say after about 10 seconds, “line testing OK”. I’d do that when she was waiting for an important phone call.

Then there was the usual…call the operator…”is this the operator on the line? Well, you’d better get off, there’s a train coming!” That was lame though. Contest or not, this is a great question.

Oh sure, it’s so much fun. My little sister used to go babysitting down the street. I’d wait until I felt that the kids were asleep and it was suitably dark outside, and then I’d give her a ring. In a whispering, raspy voice I’d say, “Have you checked the children?” Then I’d slowly slip the phone into its cradle…hehehehehehe….

one of my friends prank called my uncle. my poor 73 year old uncle while i was sitting right next to her. not when i was 10, 14, or even 17. no. i was 28.

he’s quite the lothario and swears that every young woman is out to get in his pants. i told her to call him and tell him she saw his picture at my house and found his phone number and heard he would be in town.

when i felt bad enough, i got on the phone and told him it was a joke, hahahaa. he said that my friend sounded hot and asked (again) if she was single. i said she was moving to hawaii in a week.

he’s still broken up about it. and so am i.

Oh, how we loved to prank call!! Too bad for today’s youth that it is so easily traceable. We had a blast doing it. I was always the one to do it since I can keep a straight face and not laugh. I took my post and lead prank caller with honor.

That being said, our prank calls had NOTHING on our toilet papering skills. We were the best!

When I was younger, my boyfriend and I did prank call someone. In fact, it was the Herpetarium here in my city- but he called from his Arkansas cell phone. He kept asking to speak to someone who can help him. They had NO clue what he was talking about. So, they hung up on him. He’d call again asking if his ‘problem’ would be kept confidential. Well, the secretary hands the phone over to the manager. My boyfriend asks again, and then the manager hangs up… finally figuring out what he was talking about.

When I think about that stupid prank call, I have to giggle because it speaks for itself.

I tried to prank call my parents and a friend using a internet page that claimed you could type a phrase into the box and enter the number you wanted to have called and it would say the phrase. . . Didn’t work. We tried it on ourself first. I was rather disappointed. Other than that I have been pranked and my husband thought it was the funniest thing. I got a call on my cell phone and when I answered it was a guy asking if I would listen while he. . . um. . .had fun with himself. I thought it was my husband for a second and then doubted and asked who it was. I got the same comment back and I asked who the F*** it was and then hung up when I started to get the same comment. Wasn’t my husband but he started laughing a lot when I told him.

In 1979, before call display and modern technology, I called the fire department and told them that the house was on fire. I was all panicky and freaked out and then hung up.

Within in minutes the fire department came and realized there was no fire after smashing the door down.

The ironic thing was the person who lived there was a police officer. He heard that his house was on fire over the police radio and came rushing home in his police car.

Needless to say there was lights everywhere and the street was blocked.

Another thing we used to do is call up the boys we were supposedly going out with and either disguise our voices or have a friend pretend to be another girl who liked him (and we’d be listening on the other end) to see what he’d say. I did, once. Pressured into it by a friend. This friend said she knew the person we were calling.

Forgot about caller ID. She called back. Turns out it was a complete stranger. She left a rather annoyed message. Guuuh, never doing that again, EVER EVER EVER.

Absolutely! Dumb early teenage years of friends and I calling boys and hanging up if they answered. Now? No, can’t say that I have that much time to waste.

    All the time.

Caller id and star 67 has totally ruined prank calling. A kid was prank calling me and just about died when I called back to talk to his mom.

    October 4th, 2008 @ 12:15 am

I was never a caller, but I DID let other’s use my phone. Typically, they’d end up slipping into flirt mode, picking a man’s name and calling, pretending to be Sarah or Tasha or Jennifer or some imaginary woman that thought she’d met the dude at the bar/coffee shop/video store that night.

Funniest was when a) this mom once answered and said that her son was away backpacking in Europe but that she figured my friend’d met his bf, since he was always pulling stunts like that and gave her HIS REAL PHONE NUMBER; and b) when wives/gfs would answer and get REAL pissed that their spouse had given out their number to some twinkie. Who was obviously very drunk.

Yes, when I was in middle school, I and a friend called a random number and said “you’re on a radio program right now and you’ve just won a dishwasher!” And the woman on the phone believed it. :) And then we said her “it’s just a prank”, hehe :P

Of course I did a little prank calling in my middle school days! We were so high-tech back then, too. We’d record our voices/comments on to a piano keyboard, call someone randomly and then play our voices back in different “notes” from the piano so that we couldn’t be recognized. “Is there a John in the house? NO? Then where do you go to the bathroom??” So cheesy!

Yes! A few years ago when I returned to my home I called the person who had been youth pastor at my church. Awoke him early in the morning and proclaimed I was from the IRS and got both he and his wife very worried, then said IRS was International Rapture Search.

Years ago as some have said when there wasn’t caller id and the usual fridge and prince albert calls. I didn’t do it but once as I was afraid of getting in trouble! My brothers however, loved to do stuff like that as well as run up to a door and ring the door bell and then hide.

I go back before cordless, cell or any other kind of phone except black desk sets. We used to call stores and ask if they had Prince Albert (a brand of loose tobacco for pipe smoking) in a can and if they said yes we would say “Well you better let him out before he suffocates.”

In middle school a bunch of girlfriends and I called Wal-Mart pretending to be a customer in the bathroom stall without toilet paper. We told her we were in the last stall.

It sounds lame but just imagine that ladies surprise when she walks in the bathroom asking who called about the toilet paper and no one answers her! Hahah!! Imagine too if she might think this person just walked up and left without wiping their butt!!

When I was a lot younger, and on a family vacation, my cousin and I called people and said we were from the local sewer dept., and we had noticed they were (putting it nicely here), sending more waste than others and they needed to cut back. Some actually said they were sorry and would stop flushing so much!

  121. kimberly b

    October 4th, 2008 @ 9:35 am

Yeah. I’ve done it. I don’t think you had a normal childhood before caller id if you didn’t do it. Boy, its a shame that our childrens generation is missing out on some cheap harmless fun.

I haven’t prank called anyone, but I prank-texted my boyfriend’s boss after a particularly nice lunch out. I sent him “like, I love you, man!!!” because we were all giddy from the awesome food and I was the only person whose phone number he didn’t already know.
