Phone Giveaway!

  • October 3rd, 2008 3:10 pm

The Contest is now over. We have a winner, commenter #13 Siobhan.  Thanks so much for all of the entries!

I was recently given the opportunity to check out the new Vtech DS6121.  It’s a very sleek cordless phone with many desirable features.   The phone is equipped with DECT 6.0 Technology.  It has a digital answering system. Caller ID function.  And the design is just so handy.

The phone even has special digital technology that will protect you from identity theft during phone conversations where you might have to give personal information, which I thought was particularly handy and interesting.  Another favorite feature of mine is the selectable ringtone option. Additionally, the sound quality was awesome.

To be honest, my favorite feature by far, aside from the slim design, is the ability to locate a lost handset.  On the base of the phone, there’s a button you can push to help locate the handset if you lose it. I am so guilty of this.  It was the neatest feature, by far. It is the best cordless phone that I have ever used.  In the past, I’ve had many vTech products, including the cordless phones, and as always, they deliver in design, usability, and overall function.

You also have a chance to win one of these spectacular telephones. You don’t have a landline, you say? Well, try to win the phone to give as a gift for an upcoming bridal shower, birthday, or Christmas gift.  It is absolutely fabulous.   All you have to do is leave a comment telling me if you have ever prank called anyone.  When I was in middle school, this was the thing to do. We would just leaf through the phone book dialing people up and asking them bizarre things. Until one day, when we got in loads of trouble, which is a whole other post.

Anyway, enter to win the phone! Come on, you know you want to!

Only one entry per person. This contest will be over at 7 PM on October 11, 2008. A winner will be selected using a random generator.

I did prank call once (or a few times).

The one I remember was a girl that was in my sisters class. Her dad was the principal of the school, and she was kinda skeezy.

So, we called him and said “It’s 11:00, do you know where your daughter is?”

    And he said “Which one?”

At that point, I ran out of clever things to say (Not that I had actually SAID anything clever) and hung up.

Everytime I think of it, I’m all – that wasn’t even funny!!

My sister and I used to call random numbers and she would yell “Help! I’m getting murdered!”

Until one woman yelled me “Oh No! I’m getting murdered too!”

It took us years to figure out that she probably wasn’t.

When I was very young, before caller ID of course, I called a random number and asked the following lame question:

    Me: Is your refrigerator running?

    Prankee: Yes

Me: Well, you’d better catch it, it’s running down the street!

    Is that lame-o or what?

I used to prank call my mother all the time (when I was in Scotland). I’d call her from a friend’s house and pretend I was from a home order catalogue that she’d order from and I’d put on my best annoying English accent.

There used to be a feature on the phones in Britain where you could dial 1-7-4 and it would call you back a minute later and eventually say after about 10 seconds, “line testing OK”. I’d do that when she was waiting for an important phone call.

Then there was the usual…call the operator…”is this the operator on the line? Well, you’d better get off, there’s a train coming!” That was lame though. Contest or not, this is a great question.

Oh sure, it’s so much fun. My little sister used to go babysitting down the street. I’d wait until I felt that the kids were asleep and it was suitably dark outside, and then I’d give her a ring. In a whispering, raspy voice I’d say, “Have you checked the children?” Then I’d slowly slip the phone into its cradle…hehehehehehe….

he’s quite the lothario and swears that every young woman is out to get in his pants. i told her to call him and tell him she saw his picture at my house and found his phone number and heard he would be in town.

when i felt bad enough, i got on the phone and told him it was a joke, hahahaa. he said that my friend sounded hot and asked (again) if she was single. i said she was moving to hawaii in a week.

he’s still broken up about it. and so am i.

When I was younger, my boyfriend and I did prank call someone. In fact, it was the Herpetarium here in my city- but he called from his Arkansas cell phone. He kept asking to speak to someone who can help him. They had NO clue what he was talking about. So, they hung up on him. He’d call again asking if his ‘problem’ would be kept confidential. Well, the secretary hands the phone over to the manager. My boyfriend asks again, and then the manager hangs up… finally figuring out what he was talking about.

When I think about that stupid prank call, I have to giggle because it speaks for itself.

Didn’t work. We tried it on ourself first. I was rather disappointed. Other than that I have been pranked and my husband thought it was the funniest thing. I got a call on my cell phone and when I answered it was a guy asking if I would listen while he. . . um. . .had fun with himself. I thought it was my husband for a second and then doubted and asked who it was. I got the same comment back and I asked who the F*** it was and then hung up when I started to get the same comment. Wasn’t my husband but he started laughing a lot when I told him.

Within in minutes the fire department came and realized there was no fire after smashing the door down.

The ironic thing was the person who lived there was a police officer. He heard that his house was on fire over the police radio and came rushing home in his police car.

Needless to say there was lights everywhere and the street was blocked.

Another thing we used to do is call up the boys we were supposedly going out with and either disguise our voices or have a friend pretend to be another girl who liked him (and we’d be listening on the other end) to see what he’d say. Can’t tell ya how many unfaithful boyfriends we caught this way!

She’d usually pretend she was the paper boy’s mom & speak in a broken accent and say “you owe my son $5.00 for the paper.” lol. argh, i still actually feel bad about it!

I was never a caller, but I DID let other’s use my phone. Typically, they’d end up slipping into flirt mode, picking a man’s name and calling, pretending to be Sarah or Tasha or Jennifer or some imaginary woman that thought she’d met the dude at the bar/coffee shop/video store that night.

Funniest was when a) this mom once answered and said that her son was away backpacking in Europe but that she figured my friend’d met his bf, since he was always pulling stunts like that and gave her HIS REAL PHONE NUMBER; and b) when wives/gfs would answer and get REAL pissed that their spouse had given out their number to some twinkie. Who was obviously very drunk.

We’d record our voices/comments on to a piano keyboard, call someone randomly and then play our voices back in different “notes” from the piano so that we couldn’t be recognized. “Is there a John in the house? NO? Then where do you go to the bathroom??” So cheesy!

Oh girl, I was the QUEEN of prank phone calls. I pranked people constantly. One time I had my guy cousin call Kentucky fried chicken and ask a lady how large her breasts were. She jumped all over him and let him have it (we had called her three way, I was at my parents and he was at his). After she jumped all over him, I called her back and acted like he was my son and that he simply was calling her to find out the size of the chicken breasts per his mother’s request. I proceeded to let her know how offensive I found her behavior toward my son. This lady apologized over and over and said she is just used to getting prank phone calls and thought that him calling was one as well. Ha-ha!!! Well it was!!!!

Also, when I was in 9th grade I took gymnastics for my P.E. class and the coach was out of his office quite a bit. We would go in there and use his phone and make tons of prank phone calls during our P.E. class. I had a friend that went to another school and one day I called his mother while he was at school. I told him that I was one of the counselors at my high school and that my friend was seen on our campus. He got home from school and his mother was ticked. He got in trouble and he didn’t even do anything. Poor thing went to school and did what he was supposed to, but not according to the counselor (me) from my high school. Ha-ha!!!! Thanks for having us comment about our pranking, it brought back lots of fun memories. :)

When we were in high school, my boyfriend and I would call up people and say that we were from James Lumber and that we would be coming over tomorrow to start building their pole barn. Some of the wives were totally confused and were like ummm… ok??? I guess my husband didn’t tell me about this..(I can only imagine what their husbands said when they got home) and others would FREAK OUT and PANIC about the “confusion”. Then Caller Id became popular and we had to stop… LOL I wonder how many calls James Lumber got about us?!

Ok, I lived in the boondocks and we were poor folk, so caller id was out for a while before we’d ever heard of it. Unfortunately, I loved to prank call and the VERY last time I did, apparently, I got someone richer than we were (who wasn’t?). It was around midnight and when she called back, my parents answered and I was grounded for a whole 6-week school period! My parents were NOT ones to take nonsense!

I had my cousin over for a sleep over and we just dialed a random number and when this woman answered I just spoke gibberish and then hung up. We laughed for about two seconds when all the sudden my phone rang and asked for my mother. I was too stupid to realize the woman had caller ID. The next stupid step was when I actually went and told my mom someone wanted to talk to her. I got my mother and the woman explained what we did. That was the last time haha. Needless to say I got in some major trouble.

I have never prank called anyone, but I have pranked telemarketers who call me. You know the ones that are a recorded message saying your warranty is about to expire, or we can lower your credit card interest rates? If it says we want to help you lower your rates, I talk to a rep and insist the recording told me my warranty is about to expire, and I get very panicked upset that they won’t fix it so it doesn’t expire.

I’ve had reps say Okay, I’ll fix it. They come back in a few seconds and say it’s done and then try to interest me in lowering my interest rates. One rep apparently got tired of dealing with me and told me the warranty expired because I was $2,000 behind in payments. I almost started to cry and asked him if I could use my credit card to bring it up to date. To give him some credit, he did NOT take my CC#, but he did still try to get me to lower my interest rates. When I told him I really really needed lower rates and that I need to know his company’s address or at least see their website before I could do business with them, he hung up on me. :-(

Yes, I’ve done prank calls. When I was 10 or 11, my cousins came over for Christmas weekend and one night we randomly called people and asked for weird names. Later that night, I hit redial on the phone by accident and the guy who answered said something like, “You f*** little brat, I’m going to call the cops. You better never call me again or I’m going to…” I hung up on him but I was scared that he really called the cops. I haven’t pranked anyone since.

I have been pranked myself. When I was a Junior, I got a phone call on a Saturday afternoon and the guy said that he loved me and hung up. I knew it was a prank and was laughing so hard. The next Monday at school, I found out that Travis (jock) was prank calling all of the dorky girls.

Well we would tell some of the kids that they had been naughty and that they should be good for Christmas. One kid told us that he didn’t believe in Santa. That was when my friend said, “Fine, I won’t bring you any presents.” The kid then shouted, “I believe! I believe!”

We would first talk at length about our hair being below our waist and how afraid we were to cut it and on and one. Very, very naughty and wrong to do. I was probably around 8 or so, and my siblings and I would call up random people in fake voices…sometimes we would say “Oops, wrong number” but I vaguely remember pretending that someone had won a trip to Hawaii…unless I am mixing that “memory” up with a book I read :)

She would call someone and act like she didn’t speak much English but admonish them for leaving her at the airport for four hours. In this day and age of caller ID I can’t imagine prank calls happening nearly as much as they used to. Thanks!

Shes a nice lady but when ur in her class, shes pretty darn strict! Well one day we decided to call her office so we did and toldher that our company (i think we named it goldmine)heard she was a big fan of gold colored clothing and products so we were going to hook her up with soem shoes and outfits free, we just wanted to know if she was interested so we could contact her in th future, she said yes, and lets say she was soo NICEEE that day lol I also called my mom when i first got a cell a few years ago, and told her we were still waiting for her payment for her order fromthe sears catalog! She wasnt happy with that prank call- she never ordered from sears bfore!! haha

Oh my gosh yes, we used to make “phony phone calls”, LOL! If I only knew back then how annoying we were, I never would have done it! My girlfriends and I used to make lots of prank calls when we were young teenagers. God forgive me, please!! We used to call the houses of the boys we had crushes on. When their parents or sibling answered we would ask for the person (boy crush) and when he came to the phone we would just listen to his voice! How immature is that, LOL! It brings back memories of a more simple time of life when we didn’t have a care in the world. Hope my kids never go through that phase – another life lesson I need to teach them! We sure could use this ultra cool Vtech DS6121 cordless phone in our home. With 3 children and a husband we are always needing an extra phone to use! I love the specs on this phone, they cover all the important basics!! Thanks for this great giveaway and for letting me reminisce about my past!

The poor person on the other end would start out nicely telling us we had the wrong number, and get more and more exasperated as the calls went on. Finally, one last person would call and say “Hi, this is Jennifer, do I have any messages?”

What what an awesome phone!! SWEET!!

When my best friend & I were in 10th grade I think, her, me & her sister stayed up all night one friday dialing random numbers & making prank calls…but oh no, it wasn’t just to people we went to school with or the lunch lady….

No our stupid butts called the virgin islands, Hawaii, Cali & a few other places…

We ended up calling some hotel in the Virgin Islands & I was on the phone, asking the lady about hotel rates, lol, she ended up yelling at me & called me a “son of a b***h” then hung up. So we hit redial & I asked why she hung up on me and she replied “you ARE, you ARE a S.O.B!!” and then continued to cuss me out.

Then we randomly dialed some Hawaiian dudes named Andy & Mike I think & we stayed on the phone with them for like 3 hours just chatting…

Needless to say when Teresa & Nikki’s mom got the $700 phone bill all of us were in deep poop!!

When I was little I used to love ambulances, I thought they were so neat so one day when my mom was busy I came up with a brilliant idea. If I called 911 they would send an ambulance and maybe I could ride in it. I called 911 & screamed, then hung up. The police came pretty fast and I got in alot of trouble

It brought back many memories, stumbling across my 13-year old (middle-schooler) son, carefully dialing the ‘disable caller ID’ code, then prank calling his school-buddies — his attempts to disguise his voice were the funniest part of the whole thing…

OHHHH YEAH I did my fair share of prank calls, the usual grocery store ones, to friends, to friends parents. Nothing as bad as the poster above that called the fire department (OMG!!) but they still made us roll around on the bed laughing till our bellies hurt just the same.

We SOOOO need a new phone, ours is so old I am surprised the numbers are not rotary dial :)

In sixth or seventh grade, when several of us girlfriends would get together for sleepovers, the most popular bedrooms to meet in were the lucky ones with phones — and sometimes we would be calling cute guys, sometimes the local pizza places, less often dialing at random… I remember the one random call made where the person who answered really scared us, talking in this very strange accent about collecting wicked little girls for sale overseas — too large a hint of ‘unsafe’ and calls after that were usually to people we knew… ah, times past… you should ask about people hitchhiking next, maybe? Thanks for the chance at the nice phone!

Recently I phoned an old friend at his office. The receptionist said he was with a client, and Did I want to leave a message? I said yes. I gave her my phone number, and asked if he would call “Ida Sessions.” Ida Sessions is a character in my friend’s favorite movie, CHINATOWN.

Sure enough, my friend, unwittingly, returned my call.

He asked politely, “Is this Ida Sessions?”

I roared laughing, and only then did he realize whom he’d called.

When I was a child. Our neighbor across the street had a large front room window by which they always sat with the curtains drawn open. We soon discovered that their telephone was on a coffeetable near them. Peering through a crack in our curtains, we would call their house and wait for them to reach for the phone at which time we would hang up just seconds before they would lift the receiver. I don’t recall if they ever figured out what was going on.

I never made random prank calls, but one time my friend and I called a radio station several times in a row, using different accents, to request the song “Shadow Dancing” by Andy Gibb. After about five calls, the DJ asked, “Are you having a party?” But he did eventually play the song.

I don’t remember pranking anyone, at least not anything original. I do like to get telemarketers calls though and ask them all kinds of funky questions, like what they are wearing and telling them I am in the bathtub and I would like for them to wash my back. They normally don’t call back after that. It’s so funny to hear some of their responses!

In the 60’s we use to call the grocery store and ask if they had pop in the bottle. They would say yes and we would say will let him out Mom is calling him for supper.

With my existing phones turning into junk, the timing to win these would be great.

I really can’t believe that everyone hasn’t made prank phone calls when they were young- what sheltered lives you all have lived. I on the other hand remember making many many calls with my girlfriend at her home. We did all the ones you have all said, I do remember calling and asking for someone say named Alice and then calling many times for Alice and they would say this is the wrong number and then you would call and say This is Alice do I have any messages–silly and sad but when you were in middle school it seemed sooo fun!
