We be Nebulizin’
- August 31st, 2008 5:04 pm
Allie and I have spent the entirety of our weekend holed up on the couch with some nasty virus. It wouldn’t be too bad, but any sickness for her ulitmately wakes up the roaring dragon that is her asthma. Once her asthma starts acting up, we are in for it. So the past couple days have been spent hooked up to a nebulizer every 3-4 hours while she watched the Water Horse for the 900th time.
I considered taking a photo of her hooked up to the machine, because there was something so odd about the way it hangs on her face and how miserable she looks. But the photo would be so pitiful. So I didn’t.
I am absolutely convinced that seeing your child hooked up to any sort of device with a mask that, in the end, aids in their breathing will age a person at least 5 years. If I guess that she has been hooked up to it at least 12 times over the past couple days, that is 60 years. That makes me 83 years old. That said, respect your elder. heh.
As far as good news goes, I found out that the fabulous people at Divine Caroline nominated me for the Love! this site award. I am really thankful. The web has been bombarded with people asking for votes for things or discussing voting lately. I think that gets tiresome for everyone. I firmly believe in voting for elections. I like to vote for online things too. But at some point, hearing the word vote when you are for sure a voter gets slightly greasy.
The thing is: if you love this site, I’d love to have your vote, but I’m not going harass or beg you to go vote for me. In fact, this is the last time I am mentioning it until voting time is almost over. Because honestly, the last thing you people probably need is someone else all up in your grill asking you to vote for them for something.
Man, alive! I am a Debbie Downer today. But I feel like crap, and I’m being forced to watch College Football. I hope that you are all having fabulous Labor Day weekends! I will be off writing rap songs about nebulizers and reading the third book in the Twilight series. (don’t make fun.)
PS. I also started a writing job a while back that I am not allowed to tell you about yet. But when I am allowed, I will, and it is so exciting.

I can sympathize with the nebulizer agony. My youngest was hospitalized with RSV at 3 months. Ever since then EVERY time he gets a cold I have to break out the nebulizer every 3 hours just so he can breathe. We are hoping he grows out of it before it is diagnosed as actual asthma.
Hope she gets to feeling better.

I totally know what you’re going through. My 4 yo has asthma too — whenever a regular cold (something that other kids would have no problem with) hits, we’re on the neb every 3-4 hours 24/day. We’ve been doing it since she was 18 months. SUCKS. Thankfully, the past 9 months have been really, really good, with the combo of meds she’s on — seems to control it MUCH better. (Whereas, before, she’d wind up in the hospital for an overnight stay …)
If you EVER need someone to talk to about it don’t hesitate to contact me. Seriously. I know EXACTLY where you’re coming from.
Sending healing thoughts your way …

So by your math, I’m older than Methusalah.
We have had to do nebulizers with Monkey since he was about 4 months old. It wasn’t bad then, it wasn’t bad until 8 months when he started walking. Then all hell broke loose.
He’s gotten better now and will sit and watch a baby Einstein or Wonder Pets when we have to do them.
i feel your pain lovely.
Hope all is better your way soon!!

Congrats on the writing thing!
My littlest one had RSV and pneumonia at 9 weeks. The respiratory therapy was agony. Luckily, she outgrew her asthma and is as healthy as they come now. I hope the same is true for your little one.

No asthma or RSV with my brood…YET! But we did have two stints in the ER with my 2YO when she was ten months old for CROUP. My first two had nothing of the sort.
Ever since then, every little sniffle she gets turns into an awful, dry, tight, barky cough that lasts for weeks. She has an inhaler now that she has just recently stopped fighting. (Most of the time, anyway!) Inhalers and humidifiers will be our way of life until she finally outgrows it, if she ever does!
I guess I can handle the coughing so long as the stridors never come back. They actually had to admit her after our second night in the ER because she was barely breathing…..
I hope Allie recovers quickly! And, I hope you get back control of the remote soon. When my husband has it, we’re either watching ‘The HIstory Channel,’ something politcal, or some MSNBC prison special. I just tune it all out and look at my book or whatever I’m knitting. I swear, I think knitting has saved our marriage!

Hi Amanda, and thanks for visiting and commentlng on my blog! I appreciate the nod. I like your blog, and will add it to my “must read” list! I’m so sorry that your little one has athsma; that must be very difficult to live with. A friend of mine had a little boy with athsma, and I remember her struggles.
Thanks again for stopping by my blog!

Ah, the nebulizer.
My oldest has asthma and when he was younger it was so bad he was hospitalized for 2 weeks. :S
Luckily, it’s gotten better as he ages. It is no fun.

Years back my son who was at the time 3-4 had to use a nebulizer, and you are absolutely right…its awful to see your child in the position. He grew out of it, thank goddess! Hopefully your little one will too.

Hate the nebulizer … except that it makes it so much easier for my girls to breathe. At least my girls (and Allie!) are now old enough to realize that it makes them feel better. Nebulizers and 5-month-olds were a rough combination. Asthma and RSV suck.

Machines and kids = NO FUN. So sorry to hear that your daughter is sick. We’ve dodged asthma at our house, but my son had heart surgery when he was four. On the lighter side, is 900 viewings of the Water Horse really enough…?
I voted for you! Best of luck!

I clearly remember the first time my son needed to use a nebulizer. He was 4.5 months old and I was sitting alone in the doctor’s office crying. It was so terrifying and sad.
I hope Allie’s feeling better soon!

Yep, agree with the breathing apparatus/aging thing. When my baby was born in April, she was six weeks early and had to be put on oxygen - a tiny mask the size of a gumdrop. It made her look so pitiful!
Hope you can get out and enjoy Monday, anyway!

Tiffany D,
Crap! I just realized that I need to find someone to take with me when I see it. I don’t think I know anyone over the age of 10 and under the age of 20. hmm.

A) YAY, my sisters and I aren’t the only people who use Debbie Downer.
B) Can’t wait to hear about the job.
C) So sorry to hear about Allie being sick. As a fellow asthmatic, I definitely sympathize. Any time I get a chest cold, I pretty much have to take a week off from school/work/Life in General because of how I can barely breathe and also apparently horrendous barking rasping coughs freak people out. I hope she and you both feel better soon. Maybe she’ll grow out of it? I didn’t but a lot of people do.

Anyway, hope yours feels well again soon.

I can so empathize with you! My youngest goes thru both asthma and croup attacks and was hospitalized with bronchial pneumonia 6 times before he turned a year old. Watching him in an oxygen tent with tubes coming out of his head was HORRIBLE! They told me he’d outgrow the croup and at 13- I’m still waiting. The Dr. did finally put him on ‘asmanex’ and he loves the results. I don’t even have to “make” him take it every day. He did outgrow the worst of it and it’s been years since we spent time in the hospital.
love your blog

You think I’m going to make fun of you reading Eclipse? I’ve only found one person who didn’t adore the books. Eclipse was actually my favorite of the four books. And, when you are done with Breaking Dawn, email me. There’s drama on her website.
I hope you and A are feeling better.
