H-E-Double Hockey Sticks

  • March 8th, 2008 10:43 pm

Ugh. I suppose I’ve never mentioned my hatred for Daylight Saving(s) Time. I mean, why would I? It’s not like it occurs everyday. It isn’t like my neighbor’s dog in that it feels the need to do its business in my yard daily.

You see, the problem is that every spring Daylight Savings Time comes to shit on me. I don’t mind it so much in the Fall. Then, I gain an hour which for some odd reason makes me feel like I am pulling one over on the man, making the me to the man ratio 1:0. Until the Spring, when the man feels the need take that hour back. Me 0 The Man 1.

How rude.

I know it’s just one measly hour. But I swear, it throws my life off for about two weeks.

The underlying problem is the fact that the hour is generally stolen while I am sleeping. How dare the man rob me of one hour of sleep! I normally get up around 5:30 a.m. or 6:00 a.m. Now, due to Daylight Savings Time, my body will be getting up at 4:30 or 5, while my mind wakes at the new time.

(I will not even discuss the fact that an hour of my weekend is being robbed.)

I will be a slug Monday. I’m not sure why, but I just have a hard time internalizing all of this.

The only person who hates this more than I do is Adam. Mostly because he has to listen to me go off about it.

My reasoning here is that theft of time is pretty significant. Even if it’s just a sleeping hour, even I’m gaining it back, it still drives me nuts.

At 2 a.m., we are getting robbed. It doesn’t matter that I’m getting the hour back in the fall, just like if someone robbed your toaster it wouldn’t matter if you got it back in the fall. You were still a victim of theft.

What about you guys? Do you hate Daylight Savings Time or am I just a nut? (Note: If the diagnosis is that I’m just a nut, leave it as a pleasant smiley face. You know, for my feelings and all. )

HATE it. The child does not do well to Mr Sandman playing with him. Trying to convince him to go to sleep an hour early!? HA. I fear tomorrow. And, of course, Monday.

Let’s start a blog-o-sphere wide protest, petitions, sit-ins, and get this craziness ended right now. What really ticked me off was when THE MAN tacked another month on to the madness.

I love it! I love having it be daylight after dinner so I can go outside with my kid. It makes me feel like I still get some “day” to enjoy after I get home from work.

I’ll be all sorts of messed up tomorrow. I’ll just blame it on daylight savings instead of the booze.

I like the fact that it gets dark an hour later. It makes it easier because right now I leave in the dark and I get home in the dark. I get to spend a little time outdoors with Riley this time of year. But I absolutely detest the time shift. Just leave it one way all year. Why jack with it. Argh.

Here in the wonderful land that is Arizona we don’t believe in such things. Time moves forward one hour at a time, always :)

We don’t do daylight savings time and I love it. The only problem is that most of the country does and since this affects my job, we have to go in an hour earlier. So basically it’s still the same as having to do it anyway. I do love getting off at four though. It will mess me up for a week or two then I’ll be over it.

Yep, I hate having that hour so brutally robbed from my sleep. I bitched about it on Friday for my Haiku Friday, so I’m in the same boat. I do like having more sunlight after work, but I think it would just be so much simpler to let nature do its thing and not monkey with the damn clocks and our bodies.

    Just kidding.

I know a guy who feels the same way as you about DST, so he doesn’t alter any of the clocks in his house. Coupled with the fact that each clock is between 20 minutes fast, and 5 minutes slow, figuring out what time it is in the rest of the world can be a little awkward.

I just hate that the government decides to screw with our clocks, twice a year, TO PROP UP THE ATHLETIC GEAR INDUSTRY. Or so I’ve been told.

As an uncoordinated, geeky person much more inclined to blog than participate in sports, I just…would rather my clock was left to its own devices, all year.

Hell, part of me wishes we could just look up at the sun, and decide what time it is based on that. Worked for generations, baby. And people always got enough sleep, back then, consarnit.

Growing up in Arizona, Daylight Savings was never an issue because we don’t observe it. Where in Arizona are you from Melissa?

Alas, living in New York, DST has become part of my life and I could not hate it more. Especially since my Sundays involve me waking up at 5:30 to begin with (therefore 4:30 this week). I’m still confused and sleepy. I say if we are forced to change the clocks an hour that for the following week we are given one hour siesta time to help our bodies adjust.

I flippin hate daylight savings. It is one of the stupidest random acts our USA has thought of yet. What’s even funnier is that it was found to not generate any more daylight time, which is how they sold the whole proposal anyway! Can you tell I’m bitter?

I’m the same way, Amanda! I HATE losing that hour. It means I wake up an hour late, and then have to go to bed an hour earlier, PLUS get the kids into a new schedule.. it’s ridiculous! They should outlaw daylight savings time- it’s not like we’re farmers!

    Hate it.

I’ve never lived on a farm, so I’ve never seen the point. In the spring, it robs me of an hour of sleep I don’t have to spare, and screws my my kids’ schedules. In the fall, it gives me an additional hour of gloom in the morning, setting me up for an immediately perceptible thrust towards depression.

    Hate it.
