Turn That Frown Upside Down: Birthdays & Nonsense
- February 4th, 2008 5:44 pm
If you’d asked me what I was going to post about today say three or eight hours ago, I would’ve likely informed you that I had a colossal rant about about an extended in-law confrontation this morning. However, I’ve decided to take the ‘turn your frown upside down’ route and instead, discuss my upcoming birthday. After all, I refuse to let people with poor attitudes make me less awesome. heh.
Now, it’s only fair to warn you that I get far more excited about my birthday than any person over ten should be allowed. I just can’t help it. My mom always made a big deal out of our birthdays growing up, and it’s definitely always stuck with me. When it was our birthday growing up, it was like a mini-National Holiday in our home. Probably, it’s stuck with me a bit much, because I am forever giving my husband countdowns to the big day.
You see, my birthday is on February 11th. I didn’t allow myself to blog about my birthday until today. I was all, “listen self, lay off your birthday for a while. People get sick of hearing about it.Aside from your mother, you are the only one that cares. And she only cares, because the older you are–the older she realizes she is.” So I held back, with the exception of purchasing the girly graphic holding the birthday cake and nailing that up in January.
Every year, I throw myself a birthday party and invite all my friends over for a birthday dinner and drinks. This year, I’m almost positive I will set up a Bloody Mary Bar. (You can totally come if you live in my proximity and appreciate Bloody Marys, wine, or beer.)
Just so you know, I also put up decoratations. I know. I know. It’s out of hand.
Enough about me, what do you do for your birthday? Are you one of those people who could care less about birthdays? Do you get really excited? Do you buy yourself a gift? Because even I don’t do that–yet.
———————————————
Also, I have a little something up my sleeve for the world wide web on my birthday. I’m going to propose the idea tomorrow. Be excited, well be semi-excited, if you get too worked up this will be a major let down.
PS. Was I the only person waiting for Naomi Campbell to bitch-slap once of those lizards dancing to Thriller during the superbowl commercial? I mean, that’s what she does.

I so don’t get excited about my birthday…only because I enjoy celebrating other people’s things more than my own…
But my mom, like all moms cares!
I have been lurking around here for a while…love your blogging

YES OMG! We couldn’t even figure out who it WAS with the whole lack of gratuitous violence!
Happy one-week-until-your-birthday! My husband is eight whole months younger than me, so he is the one who counts down to my birthday, but at least he doesn’t forget!
Last year, I had a birthday party at a ceramics place with another girlfriend of mine and it was SO FUN! We had a princess cake and sparkly pink princess plates and it was so fun. Birthdays are awesome.

And I DO buy my own damn birthday present. Dammit, I love myself too much not to!

I think we may have had the same moms. The countdown to my next birthday begins the day after my last one. My birthday is really more like a “birthweek” the way I celebrate it, and I act inappropriately childish when certain people don’t play along as much as I think they should (I am mature enough to know that most of the world won’t indulge me, but certain other people are not off that hook - too bad, so sad). Luckily, I found a keeper who knows how to celebrate my birthday with me, and better yet, anymore I find that I get even more excited about making such a big deal out of his birthday because he’s one of those who never did know to turn it all into the kind of production I do. It’s like teaching someone the joy of living or something for the first time. I love birthdays! And Bloody Mary’s. I could whine that I get older each year, but I don’t give a rat’s birthday candle as long as we are all celebrating ME! (and this week, YOU!)

Birthdays were big in my house growing up to. I get really excited but have learned that my husband doesn’t plan much of anything. Therefore, I remind him a few weeks before it comes around that I expect dinner and an activity at the very least. It’s pretty funny, I can barely sleep the night before my birthday.
February 4th, 2008 @ 7:09 pm
ROFL! The commercial would have been so much better if some of those lizards bitch slapped Naomi Campbell! Not a fan. And she can’t dance. Sorry…it had to be said.
Anyhoo! WHOA! 1 week until the big shindig! How exciting! Do you make wish lists? My parents threw parties for me a few birthdays growing up. I believe they were 3, 5, 8, 12 and 15. No major decorations or road signs directing traffic though.
Curious what you have up your sleeve! Keeping it down though…as requested

Not a big fan of the birthday. I make a big deal of it for the kidlet but I seem to get disappointed every year.
I though that whole commercial was quite weird but it never occured to me she’d put the smack down on the lizards…that would have made the commercial much better

Birthdays are really low key at our house. We do just family most of the time. My son had a party for his 5th birthday, but otherwise it’s just us.
For my own birthday, I ask for the same three things every year. I want to sleep in, eat a meal I didn’t cook and have my house cleaned for me. I think I’ll ask for those until the day I die.

No wonder I like you! You’re an Aquarius. I think that is awesome you enjoy your birthday so much. Mine usually depress the heck out of me. My parents didn’t make a big deal out of them. Actually the number of real birthday parties I ever had (not the family kind, the friend kind) stands at 0.

Now, see, THIS is OBVIOUSLY where I have gone wrong all these years. I get excited about my own birthday, but NO ONE ELSE DOES. Every year I feel let down that my husband didn’t plan something fun/plan something special/remember that it was my birthday. But now I see that I should’ve been planning MY OWN fun stuff. GENIOUS!! Now I’ve got 8 months to think of something good. Thanks for the idea!

OMGosh I am a DIE HARD birthday fan! I remember all of my co-workers birthdays. There’s cake, flowers and a card for everyone! I love birthdays sooo much! My birhtday is such a huge celebration and I start the countdown every January 9th (my birthday is april 9th so it’s 3 months in advance). This year, I’m even giving myself an unbirthday celebration every 9th day of every month before my birthday. My unbirthday is coming up on the 9th and it’s so cool because it’s taking place in PUERTO RICOOOOOO!! How exciting is that!? I have forced all of my friends to come and I’m getting everyone a gift lol
I hope u have the best birthday ever! I sure wish I lived closer so I could have a bloody mary. perhaps I’ll have one while I’m on my vacation in PR just to celebrate your special day!

Yes, Our family was the same way. Your birthday is “your special day”, and my mom always tried to make it as special as she could for us. I still feel entitled to a birthday party & presents from everyone. I raise my kids like that, too.
When I was young, I dated a Jehova’s Witness, and my mom was upset at the idea of me possibly marrying him & converting– only because “They don’t even celebrate their birthdays!!” That was blasphemy. I tend to agree. Hell, I say buy yourself a present. You can always say it’s from me!

Okay, so I recently found you’re blog, and I just wanted to let you know that you make my day! As far as birthdays go, my motto is “go big or go home.” Not sure how the go home fits in, but anyways…At my house, for your birthday you were always the master supreme ruler and whatever you wanted was the rule. It all started on a fateful family vacation where my mom pulled the, “It’s my birthday and we’re listening to whatever I want to listen to.” So, congrats on your upcoming birthday! (less than 1 week! yay!) And remember, it’s your birthday and what you say goes!

i didn’t find any of the super bowl commercials humorous. ok…maybe i cracked a smile at the justin timberlake one…but naomi campbell should stick to doing what she does best…bitch slapping!!

Hee hee. I’m glad I found you. Linked to you in my blog today. I needed a dose of your funnies today.
Birthdays. Sore subject. NEVER had a party when I was a kid. No we weren’t freak-o religious, just wasn’t a deal. Mom would buy one of those ready made cakes, maybe I’d get a party hat and call it a day. It wasn’t until I moved away from the non celebrating birthday people that I got my first party, when I was 18. After that I didn’t care so much. I mean, I care if I don’t get the card in the mail from mom that is stuffed with birthday cash but other than that I don’t care.
But this year is my 30th. What the heck! THIRTY. I am totally stealing your idea and throwing myself a party this year!

I forget my birthday most years, but my kids’ is a big deal. (I think both those facts stem from the fact that my parents decided I was too old for birthdays when I turned 11.) Theirs is (Yes, “is”. They’re twins.) a few days before mine, so I think I just feel the happy it’s-all-about-my-family birthday vibes on their big day. And yes, I pick a theme and start purchasing birthday party supplies approximately 6 months ahead of time.
