Why Didn’t You Name Me Bill Cosby???

  • January 27th, 2008 5:08 pm

Lately, Allie has picked up a very interesting habit that involves completely denying her identity and claiming she is someone else.

Example:

“Allie, come here!”

“I’m not Allie. I’m Hannah!”

” What?”

“Yes, I’m Hannah!”

“Your name isn’t Hannah. It’s Allie.”

“Well, *insert super long pause* you SHOULD have named me Hannah!”

Later that day, she was Uniqua. She was also Ava and Lucy. Every new name involved a 20 questions type game concentric to the fact that I had denied her the faux name at birth.

But her trump card was the 30 minutes she spent as Bill Cosby.

You just can’t argue with a kid who wants to call herself Bill Cosby. Especially if you spent a year of your own life attempting to convince your mother to legally change your name to America. The others in the running were hooker handles like: Candi, Goodi, and Sassi.

I’m sort of glad I stuck with Amanda. sort of…

I went through a phase like that when I was a kid. I wanted to be Nancy. Like Nancy Drew. Somedays I would like to change my name but Nancy (or Bill Cosby) is not on the shortlist.

I never wanted to change my name, but man! I wished I had a middle name when I was in primary school. Later it was quite cool to not have a middle name, but then? It sucked.

Oh this made me crack up because my 3 year old always tells me her name is Uniqua! I never really wanted to change my name. There was a year where I insisted everyone call me by my legal name but I changed my tune pretty quick. I am not a fan of my legal name!

Oh my….I am still laughing! How cute!

My grandmother told all her friends my name was Heidi when I was first born…whenever I would visit in the years to come people would say hello, and when I told them I was er granddaughter, they would ask, “oh, are you Heidi?” I never understood it…then, 38 years after my birth and being named Laura, my grandfather explained it. He simply said, “Your grandmother thought I would hate that you were named after her mother, my mother-in-law, and so she toldme you were named Heidi, so I went to the Legend and toasted my new granddaughter and told everyone you were named Heidi.”

Ohh….why did I not think of that!!!

    Thanks for sharing!!!!

I was named after my very butch, lesbian cousin. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

    Backyardigans fan, huh?

That’s too funny. My son went through a brief “choose his own name” phase that usually included his favorite superhero.

Now he gets upset when he has a haircut because he looks like somebody else (his own words). He doesn’t want to be somebody else now.

I think Mr. Cosby would be flattered. When I was a little boy my nickname was ‘fatboy’. I was actually the skinniest kid on the block, but my Mom managed to hang that one on me when I was about 6 months old (and at that time, I WAS fat) and it stuck. Now that I am an adult, and I really deserve than name ‘fatboy’, everybody just calls me Lou. Go figure.

Right now, Maddie is in the “I’m Princess Maddie. Call me that.” She calls me the mean queen. When I was little, I hated my middle name. I wanted to change it, to anything different than what it was. Funny, it’s very similar to what I named Maddie.

Hello. I was looking around on some other sites and i found your link. I love your site, its really cute. I am totally obsessed with reading people’s blogs, lol. That’s funny about your daughter, I would do the same thing as a kid. I would be like “Mom, Can I change my name to Monica?” [that was first] then, i went through the “Bridgette,” stage, then the “Monique,” and the “Malina,” also a very interesting, “Shaniquae,” I guess I was just weird. Now I like the names Abigail, Jordan, Miley, Kiley, and a bunch of others. When I think of my kids names i think about Abigail, Bethany, Isabele, and Kiley. Also, for a boy, Nathan [my best big-brother's name] LOL. Well, I sound like im 4, blabbing on and on, but its what im totally, best at. Yeah. I was a weird kid. You probably think im weird now, telling you about all these names and you dont even know me. Lol.

Lol! I still tell my mom she should have named me something different. I almost named my Callie Allie, but I decided to stick that C on there! I have worried that I gave them “bad” names from the time they were born so I really hope that my girls like their names! But that is hilarious.

    Hi there,
This made me laugh, because my 5 year-old really loves the name Madision, and she wants to know why I didn’t name her Madison. I told her it’s because when she was born, she didn’t tell me she liked that name so much, so I didn’t know! Went with Kylie instead. Then she informs me that she couldn’t talk when she was born. She still likes to be called Madision.

What annoyes me even more than the freq name changes is the attitude changes it brings as well.. If my son is Donnie he acts like a tough guy.. if he is batman he is pushing his brother around to be robin (mind you baby brother is 8 months!!) LOL.. Glad to see others suffer through this as well.. :)

Garrett went through a short phase where he would ONLY answer to Rico Suave. He is 8, mind you, and has only heard of Rico Suave because, I, his mother, am totally warped.
