The New Taboo: Don’t Diss the Blogosphere

  • January 24th, 2008 5:25 pm

Lately, I’ve been rather troubled by the way non-bloggers view the blogosphere. While I’m sure that it varies for most everyone, personally, the non/anti-blogging folks that I know regard the blog as a stigma of sorts. It’s almost as if they think communicating your thoughts and feelings to the world by way of keyboard is as taboo as french kissing their Uncle. (eww!)

They roll their eyes or change the subject when blogging is brought up in conversation. Some even go as far as to verbally dismiss it in a tone you might use to describe the two week old spaghetti rotting sitting in your refrigerator.

Now, I will grant them that maybe* it is strange that I relish in relaying various aspects of my life to the world wide web.  Maybe, just maybe, my affinity for sketching out my brainwork on the internet is strange.

(I’ve not even told you people about the time my next door neighbor,an adult, pooped himself on my couch –yet.)

Back to business, as far as blogging goes, it’s what I like to do. And I believe in doing what you enjoy–as long as it’s legal ;) . If you like to riverdance, hop to it. If you like to bake, whip something up (for me). And if you like to pick scabs, well, I guess you can do that too… in private, of course.

But on a serious note, when a person’s notion is to act like blogging is an abomination rivaling that of Pluto being dethroned from planethood, I’m somewhat offended. After all, blogging is my outlet. Everyone needs an outlet. I’m not picking on theirs–yet. Maybe the nonbloggers like to sing, read, exercise, or grow 14-inch chin hairs while basking in the warm sun, but I like to blog. And you probably do too!

Honestly, I think those failing to understand the worth, community, support, and advantage of the blogosphere are simply missing out. Yet, you can’t explain it to them. It would be like telling a dinosaur about GPS. You can’t construe the wonderful people you meet, and how even when a few stinkers come your way the wonderful people more than make up for it.

In the end, this is the 21st Century. There are thousands of people typing away on their own little piece of the world wide web. As one of them, I fail to see what is allegedly so strange. But if this is it. If this is strange, I’m more than happy to be in its ranks.

*By maybe, I meant not at all. heh.

PS. Since shameless is in part of my site name, I should continue to live up to it by once again asking you folks to go vote for me at the bloggies! Support an underdog.

What?? Is sharing intimate details about life with complete strangers online odd?? :)
Well….so are those metallic pants people like to wear these days, but I’m not complaining!

it drives me crazy, when i want to talk to my hubby or friends about something i talked to one of my blog friends about, or read about on a blog…and they tune me out!!! you’re right! they don’t get it. they think it’s ridiculous. and…a facade. that we are all a bunch of lonely women and men, hiding behind our computers, bitching about our lives…when, as bloggers, we know that it’s waaaaay more than that. i’m not lonely! i have friends and family. and, i have my wonderful blog friends! those who don’t get it…the blog thing…mark a spot on my butt and kiss it!!!

WE blog because it’s fun, therapeutic and lets us be a bit of a voyeur and an exhibitionist all at once and it’s legal :-)
I haven’t come across any naysayers as of yet, thankfully. Sorry that you have.
Can’t wait to hear about the neighbor poop story :-)

Ha! Finally, someone said what I have been noticing. When I play cards with my friends, I start to say, “So and so on the Internet told me …” but I don’t say it. They think I am addicted to the Internet! Unlike most of them who are addicted to television and shopping.

Well said. I started my blogging as a method for keeping track of my progress as an artist (that’s assuming, of course, that I actually AM making progress). It was going to be personal. It was going to be my ‘diary’. Now I have two blogs. One for my ‘Art Projects’ and one for every day (blog365 member). I have made new friends out here. In Kuwait. In Australia. In Massachusetts. In Tasmania. How else on earth would I have ever been able to meet these people, much less become part of their lives and them part of mine?

The ‘rest of them’ don’t know what they’re missing.

    Pfft on them.

Funny you should mention this because I wrote about an online training session I had for work and the guy talking in it was talking about blogs and how ridiculous he thinks they are. Thankfully nobody else was around to see me blush, but when somebody I know IRL hears the word “blog”, eyes start rolling.

I was at my stepsisters for Christmas and she was talking about a friend who had a *gasp* blog. She wasn’t judging her, it was just a new idea to her.

Seriously though, why do people write autobiographies? (other than for the money)

Something about putting my thoughts out there to objective eyes makes it better than therapy.

I originally started blogging to get out the ranting and raving that went on inside my head. The meds had quit working, you see, so it was either a blog or a straightjacket.

Some would argue that I made the wrong choice, but I do have fun.

I’ve interacted with people on the web for over ten years now (on forums and things before my more recent habit of blogging), and it definitely seems to addle some of my r/t friends. I think there is still a perception out there that the web is populated with nothing but predators and prey, not people with a genuine desire to communicate, create new friendships and find the ways that they relate to others from all over the globe.

Oh, I get that too. I have one friend who supports me and yells at me when I post and don’t tell her, and the rest of them tease me mercilessly about it. She (the supportive one) mentioned my going to San Francisco in casual conversation last night. When the friend we were having dinner asked me why I was going, I shrugged and told him it was for a conference. I didn’t dare tell him it was for BlogHer! I’ve heard enough about how I am wasting my time reading on the internet. Stupid non-bloggers.

I agree …. it is some sort of elitism akin to those who haughtily announce to all that they never watch television as only {fill in the pejorative} ignoramuses watch TV as there is nothing worthwhile or intelligent is there. If these folks cannot find a worthwhile blog to read (or tv show to watch) then they are not looking very hard.
