Redhead Girl

  • July 7th, 2009 3:02 am

Dear Allie,

It is 4 in the morning.  You had stomach trouble earlier, and you woke up from what looked like very peaceful sleep to “make [your] butt talk,” as you say.  As a result, you are now awake and busy chatting away.   You’re telling me a story about a prince named Adam Hill Kentucky Fried Chicken Head.  He loved fried chicken, but a storm came and “blowed” him away.  Then Amanda found Adam. They got married and had a little girl named Allie.  Do not doubt your story telling skills, because I’ve actually left a lot of the details out.  It was hard to type the story and listen to you weave it.

I like you, kid. I can have regular conversations with you, and to be quite honest, you give awesome advice.  To be four, you are full of tiny wisdom.   You are also more than willing to tell people if something smells “horrible” or tastes “gastly.”  Even in restaurants or public bathrooms, you’re all, “don’t get the sweet tea! It tastes horrible.”  It sounds way better coming from you, because I would ultimately compare the taste of bad sweet tea to ass, if pressed.

While I type this, you are crunching crackers in my ear.  Like right in my ear. I wasted years of  my life learning dumb things like the anatomy of the ear.  Someone with more time on their hands would give a sordid and detailed explanation of how the sounds is travelling and being processed. Even thinking about reaching for that knowledge is, in this moment, ridiculously exhausting.   Please just know it is loud, and I love you.

I just told you to get out of my grill.  You told me you love being in my grill.  I love you being in my grill too. However, I’ve had enough with the crunching.

Allie, I’m tired.  I think we should try sleeping.  It’s a mythical thing that some people do.     BUT–just now you looked at me a mouth full of cracker and yelled, “HEY! YOU WANNA SEE HOW DOGS CHEW HARD THINGS!?!” and demonstrated your chewing abilities. You got a crumb in my eye.  You’re such a lady.

Love always,

Mom

PS. your dad is in there sleeping perfectly well, as he is not entertaining a four year old with tummy problems. damn that Adam Hill Kentucky Fried Chicken Head.

I was going to tell you to wrap her up in a rug – but I think I like Avitable’s advice better.

*Should you happen to try the ‘roll her up in a rug’ exercise, remember to keep her arms at her sides as you roll her up in the rug. Otherwise, she could escape the rug.*

Damn, she is a sweetheart…as is her mommy. This was delightful to read.

At 3, my girls describe things as horrible, beautiful, disgusting and amazing…and it’s like music to my ears :) It’s just so awesome that these little creatures actually taste, feel, smell, hear…and make an actual valid OPINION. Ans they’re usually spot on. Crazy stuff.

I know. It is insane. I love listening to Allie describe things, because her way is usually completely correct.

I would just like to say, in regards to your most recent twitter, that I LOVE Royal Pains. I just got done watching the newest episode, and it was a very good one too! I’m scared that it’ll be just a ’summer’ show, and be bumped when the fall lineup starts again. Let’s hope not, but better shows have been cancelled for less….

    @Natalie Hill,
I agree. I’m loving it more and more. I really hope it isn’t cancelled.

Haha! I love thinking of a tiny kid spouting back, “I love being in your grill!”

My kids were making me CUH-RAY-ZEE today. No matter how many times I have told them that I am on deadlines, they keep coming up to show me their Lego creations or new paintings. I want to scream, but then I don’t want to crush their little creative hearts.

You *might* be living my life. Mine wakes me up at 7:15 on a Saturday morning to tell me that her stomach is ‘rumbly’. I go turn the tv on, take care of her food and drink needs, and then crash on the couch. She sits next to me, idly playing with my hair, and telling me sweet and silly little things while I try to go back to sleep. Her dad? Snoring in the bedroom. Sigh. I wouldn’t give it up for anything. But at the same time? It would be great to sleep in and not have a kid up my ass at all times.
