AwkwuuuurT: Broccoli is awkward

  • December 17th, 2008 6:03 pm

Allie has been trying to apply her newly found love for the word ‘awkward’ to nearly any situation she encounters.  Watching and listening as she attempts to navigate new vocabulary is nothing short of an adventure. As her mother, I try to guide her with correct use of the word. However, as a person that thrives on observational humor, I want to laugh until my belly aches sometimes.

“What are we having for dinner,’ she asks one day.

“Blah, blah,  blah, *insert random food* and broccoli,” I reply.

“Brocolli? AWWWWKURRRRT,” she screams running off.

“You mean awkward,” I say.  Not  bothering to question her use of the word, because between you and I, broccoli is sort of awkward. It’s like a big patch of mini trees that you are supposed to eat, which is rather awkward. So I can easily see how having it for dinner is.

The day progresses and we’re watching a tv show with a character so clearly scripted that you can imagine what they were looking for when they hired her.  The sort where you know that when they put descriptions for casting up, the description said PRETTY BUT PLAIN in big, bold letters.  Just a plain girl, really. The sort of brown hair that blends into the screen rather than the kind that stands out all Chesnut or Chocolate like.  The girl gets closer to the screen, and suddenly, I hear Allie scream.

‘AWWWWWWWWWWWWKWURT!’

She blasts it loudly, like the sound that buzzes on a game show when you miss the question.

‘It’s awkwarD,” I correct her, ‘but what is so awkward that you had to scream it?’

‘Her face.’

Once again, she totally won, because between you and I, the girls face was sort of awkward in the plainest of ways. If you ever wonder what my daily life is like– and I doubt you do, because you are busy, and I tell you enough useless knowledge about it daily–it is as you see above.

AWKWUUUUURT!

Your Allie is brilliant, using words to describe otherwise indescribable things. Love it.

I like Akwurt much more than Awkward, btw. Very cute.

But broccoli is awkward, so are peas. You can only eat broccoli with a fork, but peas need a spoon. Irritating.

Awkward with a ‘t’. That’s better than some of the southern patterns we get down here: desk as “dest”, Wal-marts, “ing” words without the “g’, gonna and the list could go on. I had awkward spinach for dinner. Does that count?

Teach her how to use “that’s what she said” in random conversation. And get it on video.

Too funny…my daughter too likes to try out her new found vocabulary. I as a designer teach her architectural terms when we build with her block…didn’t think she was listening till they asked me at school what she was talking about…and in perfect context.

As for broccoli, it cannot be called that around here…even when we go out to dinner she orders “monkey trees”. She loves Monkey trees…broccoli…won’t eat it.

Standard answer here for anything is ‘your face’

She would fit in well here. Boo feels brocolli is superfluous.

Kelleys last blog post..I was going to entitle this ‘NSFW’ but if you are reading this at work and it hasn’t been blocked for obscene language then you must work in a brothel and then I would be all ‘This is totally safe for work, enjoy!’

Thank goodness she hasn’t picked up the word unfortunate. I can only imagine her screaming “UNFORTUNATE” at the poor girl and when you ask what is so unfortunate, she will say, “Her face.”

At my house, it’s just “your mom”. Thanks to my husband and his incredibly awesome vocabulary that consists of profanity, your mom, and geek terms. *sigh* Although…I did hear my son say “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” the other day. That’s our code word for…..well you know….”WTF”. Nice…go mom. *sigh*

That is adorable. When I was younger I wouldn’t eat the trunk part of broccoli. For some reason if I was just eating it plain and dipping it in something I didn’t think you were supposed to eat it, but if it was made with melted cheese or something on it I could eat the whole thing.
