Bits and Pieces

oh, shit.
It’s time for me start posting again. But the thing is, I feel so bogged down lately. It is as if there is always something I must being doing immediately. Something always has to be done at that very moment. The list is never ending. Such is life, I suppose.
Since I had no real subject to write about, I decided that I would type whatever was going through my mind. Good luck, and I’m sorry.
I’ve been writing a lot lately, and it’s been great. When I write, I usually do it by hand in a series of spiral bound notebooks. I seem to get more accomplished that way. There are so many distractions here on the lovely screen of this computer. I am tempted to go google chat (shamelesslysassy, add me!) with my friends or read endless blog entries or find new things to laugh at via StumbleUpon. So I do the paper thing, and it’s working really well for me. I’m currently writing about a female character that is flawed so beautifully.
Onto other things, I think it is time for me to talk about how much I love to start sentences with ‘But’ and ‘And’. I got an email telling me that I shouldn’t do that. But the thing is, I’m not one of those people that stops doing something simply because a person tells me that I am better off not doing it or I shouldn’t do it. Not if it isn’t harmful, and certainly not if I enjoy doing it. And that’s how it is. I’m not a sucker for the tyranny of shoulds. As long as it isn’t breaking the law, I generally follow my own path, walking to the beat of my own drum or drummer (I’ve never really been sure which one it was). That doesn’t necessarily mean that I think I’m right when I go about following myself, but sometimes following your joys in life is great for your sense of self and for who you are. I’m not just referencing starting sentences the the way that you would like. In the words of Eric Cartman, ‘WHATEVA, I DO WHAT I WANT!’ (It’s pretty bad when I am busting out SouthPark quotes.)
Other things, other things.
My weekend began with Allie being sick, which required numerous breathing treatments, and it ended with her flipping me off. Yes, she gave me the middle finger. When I find the person that taught her to give the finger, most likely my younger brother, I am going to punch them. hard. so very hard.
Also, Allie has recently taken up the life of a hussy. She will only wear miniskirts to school. She hikes them up on her waist. (Luckily, I’ve hidden them from her.) She talks a lot about her imaginary husband along with her imaginary boyfriends. I’m really rather confused by the whole deal. Her husband doesn’t even have a name. He is just called husband. Her boyfriends do have their own names, though. The girl is a puzzle, really.
Finally, I am so glad that it is Fall. I love watching the leaves turn and fall to the ground. Thank the skies leaf blowers. The weather outside is so awesome, and the decorations are great too. My neighbors currently have a large, fake skeleton hanging from their tree (do you like how I pointed out that it is fake? As if you would have assumed it was real? I’m such a tool). Anyway, all of my neighbors have their yards decked to the nines with Halloween and fall decor, and it is so cute. I just love everything about this time of the year, right down to the way that it smells.

Whoever wrote you shouldn’t start writing with AND or BUT is an idiot. Seriously. I had years and years of grammar, and I know it’s not good to do it too much, but it is acceptable AND definitely ok in blog format-writing. Sheesh.
I love this time of year.
Your daughter’s miniskirt fascination and husband/boyfriends phase is hilarious…and so foreign to me. I have boys, and girls have been the furthest thing from their minds…although I suspect my 11 yr old is starting to notice them, heaven forbid!!
I have to write in notebooks too. Often I do my blog entries in them and then type them out. It wastes time, but it works for me. All kinds of writing must be done that way…with fun clicky pens.

But I think this is a very refreshing and lovely post. And I really do not care for grammar ninnies! But who am I to talk? You can start a sentence, whatever way your want. And more power to you if it begins a funny family note or story!
And you thought this post would be hard to follow – I loved it. But, heck, that is just me! Thanks for keeping us up to date. HUGS!

I definitely agree with Rhea; it’s ok to start sentences in the online world with and or but. I do it all the time! I don’t know about you, but my neighbors definitely hang REAL skeletons from their trees.
Great post, funny and poignant as ever, you’re a joy to follow!

I write like I talk. And when I talk, I start a lot of sentences with ‘And’ and ‘But’. So that’s the way I write. Just like you.

If starting a sentence with “but” or “and” is wrong, I don’t want to be right. AND. People here in the USA take the whole fall/Halloween decorations SO SERIOUSLY! It is way more common to see these pretty fall displays here than in Canada. Maybe because many parts of Canada are already getting snow this weekend (Happy Thanksgiving, Canada!). It is nice to celebrate the changing season with decorations. Although I’m more a fan of the harvest themed displays than the skeletons and monsters – my kids are sensitive that way.

I hate bad grammar, but I don’t see the And or But thing as a big deal. I try not to do it, but sometimes I do. It isn’t that big of a deal. Since I am at school and live in a dorm I don’t really get to see many decorative houses unless I am on the bus going somewhere, but I am excited this year. Some of the schools here are coming trick or treating around my dorm. I love seeing kids all dressed up.

Good to see you back. I think if my brother taught either of my kids how to give ‘the finger,’ I’d punch him hard too.
Starting a sentence with ‘And’ or ‘But’ is grammatically fine. Telling someone else how to write though, is very bad form.

I learned from the movie “Finding Forrester” that starting a sentence with ‘But’ is perfectly acceptable; the proscription against it is archaic, and used by bullying grammicasters.
I also learned that I can’t watch a movie with TWO bald characters without getting really, really hungry. Brains.

Ha! Don’t worry about your grammar. It’s great. I enjoyed your post. I’m with you on the different drummer. I have to do things in my own time and follow my own path. Some people may think I’m stuck-up or a pain-in-the-ass but as time goes on, I find I care less and less.
I love Fall and the colorful decorations. Fall has been slow to come down here in the South but I do have my little scarecrows out. My neighbor has a fake monkey hanging from his tree….all year.

Glad you’re back! And sorry Allie’s been sick, that sucks. She has asthma, right? I almost don’t blame her for giving you the finger! (Well, okay…)
Technically, you’re not supposed to start sentences with “but” or “and,” but that’s a more technical thing, if you were trying to publish a paper on Shakespeare or something. I always hated it when people wouldn’t let me use but or and, because it was how I talk. So in fiction, I think it definitely applies, because you have to write in voice. I’m glad your writing is working out so well for you. I’m jealous — I’m in a real dry, frustrating spell this semester.
Have a great week!

About writing, I discovered something neat. And this may be something stupid, but it was like a a-ha moment to me. (I like to start sentences with but and and too) I’ve started writing in Word (because I type so fast my words actually keep up with my thoughts) and printing it out. It seems more real that way; to hold it in my hands on a paper vs. onscreen.
Anyhoo, thought I’d share that. I don’t know why. But I did.
(see, another but sentence!)

I write more in my paper & pen journal, too. I have been writing upwards of 6 pages in the journal I’m in right now and am about filled up. I bought my favorite kind of journal today at Rite-Aid … a plain, 180-page three-subject college-ruled notebook (one of the smaller ones) and I’ll decorate the front in my OWN style.
Fall has arrived in Oregon, too. I have been taking pictures and hope to post ‘em sometime soon. I can’t wait to celebrate my next fall in the South and see a whole new version of my favorite season!

I start sentences with but and “and” all the time. I DO NOT CARE. If someone would like to pay me to write, then I *might* reconsider my stance.
Also, when I was Allie’s age, I had a husband named Robert. We were married for a long time, like maybe a month and then I got mad at him and threw him in the garbage and married Mark. I wonder if he and I are still married? I guess that would make me a polygamist. Oops.

LOL at your young hussy. My mom used to use that word. I think she always prefaced it with “brazen” or “shameless” which would be quite appropriate given the name of your blog. Does she wear her boots with her mini skirts?
And dang on being flipped off! What a shock that must have been.
