Drag Queens and Shiny Things

  • January 8th, 2008 5:18 pm

Recently,  my friends and I attended a drag show as entertainment for one of their birthdays.

Now, don’t stress yourself about reading an entry about Drag Queens. I feel as if anyone who isn’t super uptight, doesn’t have their panties in a wad, and has a sense of humor can appreciate a man in women’s clothing wearing make-up and singing Pussycat Doll songs. If you can’t handle that, just know that before hand we ate at the Melting Pot, and it was beyond delicious.

Back to the queens, my friend Leslie and I decided it would be in the best of our interests to not reveal to our friend Lindsay that we were taking her this drag show. Rather, we would get her really sauced up before hand, and she would then be perfectly accepting of our little plan.

And so it went. Leslie spun some smoke and mirrors tale about having to meet a friend at a bar and on we went.

Now, for all of you not familiar drag shows, at this particular show the men are dressed as women and lip-sync to songs of their choice. During this performance, you will see the likes of Whitney Houston, Fergie , the PussyCat Dolls, Cher, etc.

During the singing of the songs, fans approach the stage and tip the fully dressed queens. NOW, this is where the interesting part starts. The more realistically feminine the drag queen is the more tips he/she receives. I noticed that the more the drag queen truly resembled a woman–the less hard he/she had to work. In fact, there was one man/lady just had to go out on the stage, stand and people just ran up to her with dollar bills. His/her complexion was amazing.

That’s gotta be hard for the other drag queens. I’d be quite envious if I was one of the queens who had to dance all over the stage for money, and then another walks out and people just run with it.

Another thing that fascinates me about drag queens is the names that they give themselves. I wonder how these arise. A few that I remember from my trip to the drag show are India Dupri and ‘The Innocent Beauty’. (Seriously, if I have any drag queen readers, please speak up and reveal your secrets.)

I’m not really sure how amused and entertained my friend Lindsay was by the drag (she kept a pretty straight face the whole time), but I loved it. They put on a pretty good show. It’s pretty entertaining, and honestly, they wear their make-up way better than I wear mine. :)

I mean, it’s no Thunder Down Under(oh.my.gosh.), but it’s entertaining for sure.

PS. Many of you all seem to like Phil Collins. I, however, am still standing strong with my hatred.

Never been to a drag queen show myself…not many queens out in the sticks where I live…the queens around here mostly like to prance around in their undies and their momma’s wig in front of their bedroom mirror instead of taking it to a stage, but I have to say sounds like fun.

But then, so does the Thunder From Down Under.

    Hubba hubba.

I went to the Melting Pot for the first time recently and was totally underimpressed. Sad.
